HISTORY:
Sri Mariamman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in
Singapore. Narayana Pillai, who arrived in Singapore with Sir Stamford Raffles’
party in 1819, constructed the temple in 1827. The temple is dedicated to
Goddess Mariamman. She is known to cure epidemic illness (such as chickenpox,
smallpox and chorea) and diseases.
The entrance of the temple was flocked with
devotees and tourists. We managed to catch a glimpse of the majestic gopuram
(gate tower), which is decorated with figurative sculptures of gods and
goddesses and mythological beasts. The cow which is the most sacred animals
in Hinduism, is placed on the gopuram. The temple was built in
South – Indian Dravidian style that is reflected by the pyramid shaped towers.
